Pie Crust

I have 52 lbs of apples that I am cutting up and freezing for future pies throughout the Winter.  I went to the store and bought pie crust for the first time ever and couldn’t believe how expensive they were!  $1.89 for 2 shells (from Aldi’s!)  So…my quest is to make my own.

Do you make your own pie crust?
Is it really as difficult to make as everyone says it is?

People say that they are OK with paying $2.00+ for pie shells because of the hassle to make their own.  I dont believe that it is THAT much of a pain.  It cant be any more of a pain than peeling, coring and slicing 52 lbs of apples, right? J

I suppose I will soon find out.

  1. Meg, I always...well, almost always, make my own. It's REALLY easy! All I do is use 2c. flour, a dash of salt, and about 2/3 c. shortening, and cut that all together and add a few Tb cold water until it's the right consistancy...that's it!

  2. I typically make my own pie crust. It's not really all that hard. It does take a little more time and effort thinning it out with a rolling pin but it sure does taste good!! :) Give it a try!

  3. DH had a project to master the Julia Child pie dough recipe (only with 100% butter and no shortening). He can whip out a pie dough pretty quickly now after more than 100 crusts. We wouldn't do it without a stand mixer, though I had a student who was really good with a pastry knife.
